THE PROCLAMATION OF THE WORD

First Reading – 2 Kings 1-2, 6-14

Now when the Lord was about to take Elijah up to heaven by a whirlwind, Elijah and Elisha were on their way from Gilgal. Elijah said to Elisha, “Stay here; for the Lord has sent me as far as Bethel.” But Elisha said, “As the Lord lives, and as you yourself live, I will not leave you.”

So they went down to Bethel. Then Elijah said to him, “Stay here; for the Lord has sent me to the Jordan.” But he said, “As the Lord lives, and as you yourself live, I will not leave you.”

So the two of them went on. Fifty men of the company of prophets also went, and stood at some distance from them, as      they both were standing by the Jordan.

Then Elijah took his mantle and rolled it up, and struck the water; the water was parted to the one side and to the other, until the two of them crossed on dry ground. When they had crossed, Elijah said to Elisha,

“Tell me what I may do for you, before I am taken from you.” Elisha said, “Please let me inherit a double share of your spirit.” He responded, “You have asked a hard thing; yet, if you see me as I am being taken from you, it will be granted you; if not, it will not.”

As they continued walking and talking, a chariot of fire and horses of fire separated the two of them, and Elijah ascended in a whirlwind into heaven.

Elisha kept watching and crying out, “Father, father! The chariots of Israel and its horsemen!”

But when he could no longer see him, he grasped his own clothes and tore them in two pieces.

He picked up the mantle of Elijah that had fallen from him, and went back and stood on the bank of the Jordan.

He took the mantle of Elijah that had fallen from him, and struck the water, saying, “Where is the Lord, the God of Elijah?” When he had struck the water, the water was parted to the one side and to the other, and Elisha went over.

Psalm 77.1-2, 11-20

I will cry aloud to God;  *
I will cry aloud, and he will hear me.

In the day of my trouble I sought the Lord;  *
my hands were stretched out by night and did not tire; I refused to be comforted.

I will remember the works of the Lord,  *
and call to mind your wonders of old time.

I will meditate on all your acts  *
          and ponder your mighty deeds.

Your way, O God, is holy;  *
who is so great a god as our God?

You are the God who works wonders  *
and have declared your power among the peoples.

By your strength you have redeemed your people,  *
the children of Jacob and Joseph.

The waters saw you, O God; the waters saw you and trembled;  *
          the very depths were shaken.

The clouds poured out water; the skies thundered;  *
          your arrows flashed to and fro;

The sound of your thunder was in the whirlwind; your lightnings lit up the world;  *
          the earth trembled and shook.

Your way was in the sea, and your paths in the great waters,  *
yet your footsteps were not seen.

You led your people like a flock  *
by the hand of Moses and Aaron.

God of saving power, remember us in times of sorrow and despair.  Redeem us with your strength and guide us through the wilderness. We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.

Second Reading – Galatians 5.1, 13-25

For freedom Christ has set us free. Stand firm, therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery. For you were called to freedom, brothers and sisters; only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for self-indulgence, but through love become slaves to one another.
For the whole law is summed up in a single commandment, “You shall love your neighbour as yourself.” If, however, you bite and devour one another, take care that you are not consumed by one another.
Live by the Spirit, I say, and do not gratify the desires of the flesh. For what the flesh desires is opposed to the Spirit, and what the Spirit desires is opposed to the flesh; for these are opposed to each other, to prevent you from doing what you want. But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not subject to the law. Now the works of the flesh are obvious: fornication, impurity, licentiousness, idolatry, sorcery, enmities, strife, jealousy, anger, quarrels, dissensions, factions, envy, drunkenness, carousing, and things like these.
I am warning you, as I warned you before: those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. By contrast, the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against such things. And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. If we live by the Spirit, let us also be guided by the Spirit.

Gradual Hymn: 311 – Awake, Arise: O Sing a New Song

The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to . . .
Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

The Gospel – Luke 9.51-62

When the days drew near for Jesus to be taken up, he set his face to go to Jerusalem. And he sent messengers ahead of him. On their way they entered a village of the Samaritans to make ready for him; but they did not receive him, because his face was set toward Jerusalem. When his disciples James and John saw it, they said, “Lord, do you want us to command fire to come down from heaven and consume them?” But he turned and rebuked them. Then they went on to another village. As they were going along the road, someone said to him, “I will follow you wherever you go.” And Jesus said to him, “Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests; but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head.”

To another he said, “Follow me.” But he said, “Lord, first let me go and bury my father.” But Jesus said to him, “Let the dead bury their own dead; but as for you, go and proclaim the kingdom of God.”  Another said, “I will follow you, Lord; but let me first say farewell to those at my home.” Jesus said to him, “No one who puts a hand to the plow and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God.”

Sermon – The Reverend Bill Byers

The Apostles’ Creed

Celebrant:  Let us confess the faith of our baptism, as we say,
I believe in God, the Father almighty,
creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord.
He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary.
He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried.
He descended to the dead.
On the third day he rose again.
He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church,
the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting.  Amen.

Prayers of the People

Like the dead man who sat up, let us rise to speak our prayers from the heart, saying: Lord, hear our prayer.

For the church, that its leaders come fully alive and give hope for all the members, we pray to the Lord. Lord, hear our prayer.

That people everywhere take courage in approaching death and celebrate life with greater joy, we pray to the Lord, Lord, hear our prayer.

For Christians, Jews, Moslems, that we speak more kindly of one another in church, synagogue, and mosque, we pray to the Lord, Lord, hear our prayer.

For widows, widowers, divorced parents, orphans, and all single people, that they find love in community and comfort in God, we pray to the Lord, Lord, hear our prayer.

For all in need, epecially:

Judy, Randy, Dorothy, Spruce, Andrea,
Lynn, Pat, Kathleen, Garth, Dave, DebbieDoug, Paul,
Ron, Charlotte and her family, Husam,

…and those known only to you. We pray to the Lord, Lord, hear our prayer.

God of kings, prophets, children, and widows, breathe your spirit of life into the living and the dead. Make us one with you and one another, and let all creation praise your name, now and forever. Amen.

Confession & Absolution

Most merciful God,
we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone.
We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent.
For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us, that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your name. Amen.

Almighty God have mercy upon us, pardon and deliver us from all our sins, confirm and strengthen us in all goodness, and keep us in eternal life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Great Thanksgiving – Eucharistic Prayer #3

The Lord’s Prayer
Celebrant:  And now, as our Saviour Christ has taught us, we are bold to say,
All:            Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name,
thy kingdom come, thy will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread. |
                 And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory,
for ever and ever.  Amen.

The Breaking of the Bread

Celebrant:  Creator of all, you gave us golden fields of wheat, whose many grains we have gathered and made into this one bread.
All:             So may your Church be gathered from the ends of the earth into your kingdom.

Agnus Dei
Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world: have mercy on us.
Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world: grant us peace.

The Communion

This is the Lord’s Table, not just an Anglican table.

  • The bread/wafer is received in the open palm. Gluten-free wafers are available – just ask the priest.
  • We offer the wine by way of the Common Cup. Alternatively, you may receive the wine by crossing your arms on your chest, or gently touching the base of the cup. Please know that we are fully communicated by receiving only the bread.
  • If you do not wish to receive the bread and wine, but would like a blessing, please indicate this preference by crossing your arms across your chest.

Communion Hymn: 293 – Your Hands, O Lord, in Days of Old

Prayer after Communion

God of power, we are nourished by the riches of your grace. Raise us to new life in your Son Jesus Christ and fit us for his eternal kingdom, that all the world may call him Lord. We ask this in his name. Amen.

Doxology
Glory to God, whose power, working in us, can do infinitely more than we can ask or imagine.  Glory to God from generation to generation, in the Church and in Christ Jesus, for ever and ever.  Amen.
