Advent & Christmas

Advent

Advent, a season of four Sundays, opens the Church year. The season begins on the Sunday closest to Saint Andrew’s Day, November 30. Advent’s message is that God in Christ is coming to the world.

Since Advent promises the coming of the Lord, its message is “prepare”. The Lord is coming whether the world is ready or not.

How does Advent suggest that we prepare? By turning away from that which does not bring us closer to others or to God (repentance); through prayer; and with patience, trusting we cannot rush through the time of preparation.

Traditionally we place an Advent Wreath in the sanctuary during Advent, lighting one additional candle each Sunday until Christmas Eve/Day when the central Christ candle is lit. The light represents Christ’s light in the world
